Celebrating Our Young Martial Artists: A Fantastic Grading at Martial Movement 360 in Lichfield!

Children’s grading is a structured assessment where young martial artists show the skills they have practised over a term, and it is one of the most rewarding moments in our calendar at Martial Movement 360. Each grading is a celebration of effort, not a pass-or-fail exam.

There were plenty of smiles, determination and proud moments at Martial Movement 360 recently as our young martial artists took part in their latest grading — and what a fantastic job they all did!

It was wonderful to see how far the children have progressed, not just in their martial arts skills, but also in their confidence, focus and willingness to challenge themselves. Every child has their own journey, and seeing them put their hard work into practice makes days like these incredibly rewarding.

More Than Just Belts and Grades

At Martial Movement 360, we believe martial arts should be about much more than learning techniques or achieving the next belt. It’s about helping children become more confident, developing self-discipline, learning respect and discovering what they can achieve when they keep trying.

We also believe that children should be allowed to be children! Our approach is to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where youngsters can learn, have fun, make friends and develop at their own pace. Every child is different, and we want every student to feel encouraged, valued and supported, whatever their starting point.

We don’t expect children to be miniature adults. Instead, we use fun, engaging activities alongside clear boundaries and positive encouragement to help them develop important life skills as well as their martial arts abilities.

The grading was a brilliant opportunity for the children to demonstrate what they’ve learned, show their determination and celebrate the progress they’ve made. Whether it was performing techniques, working with a partner or overcoming those little nerves that can come with being assessed, they gave it their best — and they should all be very proud of themselves!

Pro TipPractise the “show and tell” version at home: your child demonstrates a technique and explains it out loud. It builds confidence fast, and it mirrors what happens on the day.

Our children’s classes start from age 5 for beginners, with intermediate classes for ages 5 to 18, so every child prepares at a pace that suits them.

We’d also like to thank all our parents and families for their continued support. Bringing children to classes, encouraging them to keep going and celebrating their achievements at home all play an important part in their development.

It really is a team effort, and it’s fantastic to see everyone working together to help our young martial artists learn, grow and achieve.

At Martial Movement 360, our instructor has over 30 years of experience, and they have guided many young martial artists through children’s grading. If your child is ready to start, our Kids Self Defence Classes are the perfect first step, and for parents who fancy joining in themselves, our Adult Self Defence Classes run twice a week and cater for all levels, from beginners to experienced.

Helping Children Become the Best Version of Themselves

One of the best things about teaching children is watching their journey unfold. A child who might initially be shy or unsure of themselves can gradually become more confident, focused and willing to have a go. Others discover that they can persevere when something feels difficult, listen more carefully or work more effectively with their classmates.

These changes don’t happen overnight, but they’re just as important as the techniques they learn along the way.

At Martial Movement 360, we’re proud to provide a positive environment where children can develop these qualities while enjoying their martial arts journey. We celebrate effort as well as achievement, encourage children to support one another and remind them that progress comes from practice, patience and a willingness to keep trying.

Congratulations again to all our young martial artists who graded! You’ve worked hard, made us proud and taken another step forward on your martial arts journey. Keep smiling, keep learning and, most importantly, keep enjoying yourselves!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a children's grading?

A children's grading is a structured assessment where young martial artists demonstrate the skills they have learned to earn their next belt. At Martial Movement 360, our gradings for children cover beginners aged 5 years and upwards and intermediates aged 5 to 18 years. It is not just about technique; it also assesses attitude, effort, and focus. Gradings give children a clear goal to work towards and a chance to celebrate their progress in front of instructors and peers.

How can I help my child feel less nervous about grading?

Helping children with grading nerves starts with reassurance and routine. Talk through what will happen at the grading in advance so there are no surprises, and remind them that instructors are looking for effort, not perfection. Practise key techniques at home in short, fun bursts. On the day, keep the atmosphere calm and positive, and avoid placing pressure on the outcome. Arriving early and having a familiar routine can also help settle nerves before they step onto the mat.

How often do children have martial arts gradings?

Grading frequency varies by programme and individual progress. At Martial Movement 360, gradings are aligned with each child's readiness and ability, so children are only put forward when they are prepared. This purposeful progression means children are not rushed through belts. Instead, they build confidence and skill at their own pace. Speak to your instructor if you want to understand the typical timeline for your child's next grading.
